Exzellenz,

MYANMAR

Dear General,

I am very concerned about the fate of Ma Than Htay and Ma Tin Tin Oo, two Buddhist nuns, who were arrested on January 16th, 2003, and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment. The human rights organization "Amnesty International" regards both of them as prisoners of conscience.

The two women had only used their right to freedom of opinion in an absolutely peaceful way when demonstrating near the town hall in Yangon showing flags and distributing leaflets among passersby. They were asking for lower prices for basic food such as rice and cooking oil and were appealing for the release of political prisoners. They also wanted the negotiations between the State Peace and Development Council and the National League for Democracy to be continued.

With all due respect I want to make clear that I object to silencing people with oppositional views and criminalizing peaceful political activities in any part of the world. Therefore I should like to urge you to release the two nuns immediately and unconditionally. I also hope very much that imprisonment conditions are in accordance with international standards for the time being.

Yours sincerely,
